USAFA Team Handball Club

The U.S. Air Force Academy Team Handball Club has a rich legacy of success, spanning over 40 years. With 5 National Championship Gold Medals and 9 podium finishes, this club remains one of the most accomplished cadet clubs at USAFA. Among its distinguished alumni are five Olympians, more than any other Academy sport.

This year, the club boasts a strong mix of experienced upper-classmen alongside a talented group of new 3rd and 4th class cadets. The club recently achieved LOS status for its 32 members, allowing them to dedicate their daily after-school activities entirely to handball training. With the continued leadership of Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh and the return of Lt Col David Schmitt (USAFA Handball Goalie ’01-’05) as assistant coach, the team is well-positioned for success.

The Center-West Gym at USAFA recently received painted handball lines—no more taping the floor before practice! However, court space remains at a premium, requiring the team to compete for gym time with other athletic programs. Despite this, the club has had two victorious home scrimmages against Denver THC and a match at West Point during the USAFA-WP football weekend, which has only fueled their drive for revenge at the Denver Invitational in December!

Donations play a crucial role in supporting these endeavors. Contributions will directly fund travel expenses for tournaments and help refurbish essential club equipment like jerseys, travel gear, and balls. Generous donations in 2023 helped provide the new uniforms shown in the attached pictures—the first in many years.
