The USAFA Alpine Ski Team has been competing since the 1960s, participating in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines of ski racing. The team was previously a Division 1 team and practiced at the now-closed Broadmoor ski run. Before the turn of the century, the team transitioned to Division 2 and now competes in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA).
Despite its small size of 10 cadets (usually five men and five women), the USAFA Alpine Team has consistently produced talented ski racers. In 2023, the men's team had its most successful season since 2009, placing fifth at nationals. This past winter, the men’s team ranked first in the division, second at regionals, and seventh at nationals, making them the highest-ranking service academy men's team at the nationals event in 2024. Additionally, a talented freshman female skier qualified as an individual and competed in New York last March.
For the 2024-2025 winter season, many of the talented male skiers are returning to the team while they also hope to find new talent among the freshmen class during tryouts in December or January to build out both teams.
The team aims to participate in all four regular season races, which qualify them for the westernr egional race and the nationals race. While the locations for these races are yet to be announced by USCSA, all division races last season were held in Colorado. Both the men’s and women’s teams hope to qualify for regionals and nationals this upcoming year.
Donor funding would primarily cover the team’s operational costs for lodging, lift tickets, and race registration fees, as well as equipment for practices to maintain their competitive edge. If those items are covered, the team would also benefit from USAFA team jackets to increase team unity.
If you have any questions about the team, feel free to reach out to the Officers in Charge/Coaches: Capt. Kaitlin Poole, an instructor of physics, or Lt. Col. Michael Wilkinson, an assistant professor of aeronautics.
